OCR: Hares and rabbits belong to the order Lagomorpha, and are characterised by their long back legs and ears. Several species are found in the deserts of the American southwest, including the desert cottontail Sylvilagus audubonii and the larger black-tailed jack rabbit Lepus californicus. Whereas these two rabbit species are found outside of desert areas, the antelope jack rabbit Lepus alleni is only found in the southern Arizona and New Mexico deserts.
